How to get blood stains out of bed sheets

Whether you’ve woken up to blood stains from period sex, experienced your first period, or your pad has moved out of place, don't worry, we're here to help. We'll share some tips on how to get period blood stains out of bed sheets.

Unfortunately, period stains are a fact of life. But just because they're common doesn't mean they're easy to deal with. If you don't treat a period stain correctly, it can set into the fabric and be difficult to remove. And let's be honest, no one wants to sleep in a bed with blood stains on it.

Steps to tackle blood stains on bed sheets

The good news is that there are a few things you can do to get rid of period blood stains on your bed sheets or mattress.

Step 1: Soak in cold water

As soon as you notice the blood stain on your favourite linen, the first thing to do is remove them and soak the stained area in cold water for 30 minutes. This will help to break down the blood and make it easier to remove.

Step 2: Dab the stain

Apply cold water to the washcloth and dab away the blood, starting at the outer edges of the stain and working inward. This helps to keep stain removal as contained as possible to prevent it from spreading further and setting into your sheets even more.

Step 3: Use a stain remover spray

Our gentle, plant-based stain remover remüvie™ is a fast-acting formula and can remove blood stains from white sheets, mattresses and almost anything that gets stained. Not only that, but remüvie™ is also great for removing stains from clothes, laundry and many other household items.

Here’s how to use remüvie™

  1. Apply remüvie™ directly to the area with the stain.
  2. Leave remüvie™ to penetrate for a few seconds, then dap gently with a damp cloth.
  3. Wipe clean and warm thoroughly with warm water, before washing by hand or on a suitable machine cycle.

No matter what the problem is, whether it's spotting on your mattress or blood stains on your bed sheets, the powerful foam action of remüvie™ can quickly dissolve the stain as well as make it easy to remove. This means that you can keep your favourite clothes stain-free rather than longer lasting.

Once you've treated the stain, you can wash your bed sheets as you normally would. Be sure to check the care label first to ensure that the fabric can be machine washed. If the care label says to dry clean only, you'll need to take your bed sheets to a professional cleaner.

Despite your best efforts, your stain might not come out right away. Especially if you have older and more stubborn stains that are hard to remove, you may need to repeat the remüvie™ cleaning process a few times in order to remove them completely. Once the stain has been removed from the area, you can wipe it down with a clean damp cloth.

How to prevent blood stains from getting onto sheets

No matter how hard we try, those little stains always seem to find their way onto our beloved bed sheets and mattress. Switching to period pants is one way to keep your sheets stain-free.

Our period pants have the absorbance of 4 tampons, so you can rest assured no period blood is getting anywhere near your bed sheets. Period pants are super comfortable and move with your body, so there’s no fear of pads moving out of place and causing leaks. The absorbent layer also curves up the back, so there is no chance of leakage, even when you are lying down.

In our previous blog, we also put together a few preventative measures you can take to reduce period leaks at night.

With a mattress protector, you can keep your mattress safe and clean

In spite of the fact that your period is usually regular, sometimes it can appear a day early, and you may wake up to the unpleasant surprise of finding your sheets and mattress stained with blood.

This is where a mattress or sheet protector can come to the rescue. Using a mattress or protector during your period means you don’t have to worry about your pad, tampon or any other period product leaking overnight or getting your period unexpectedly whilst you are sleeping.

The mattress protector on your bed can be easily washed in the washing machine, allowing you to keep your bed as new as ever. And they are not just great for when you are on your period. Mattress protectors can be used throughout the year, keeping your mattress and bed stain free.

Period stains and leaks can be a pain, but with a little effort, you can remove them quickly and easily and get your bed sheets looking good as new once again.
