The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading governing body for organic textiles like cotton. GOTS certification ensures our cotton is pure, ethically sourced and made without chemical pesticides, forced labour, child labour, or unfair wages

Chlorine bleaching creates a byproduct called dioxin. This poses serious problems for the environment and for our health. Dioxin is a known carcinogen and leaves detectable residuals in products bleached with any type of chlorine bleach. In period care this type of bleaching unnecessarily exposes us to low levels of dioxins every time we use period products

. Dioxin is absorbed into the fat cells of humans and wildlife, where it can remain for up to 11 years. This means with repeat exposure Dioxin can bioaccumulate faster than it can be expelled. Given the number of tampons a person potentially uses each year let alone in a lifetime, the increased & repetitive exposure to dioxin means increased risk.

Watch out for ‘Chlorine Free’ bleaching too, as some of these ‘Chlorine Free’ methods still include chlorine dioxide. Unlike mainstream period products, &SISTERS by Mooncup is Totally Chlorine Free (TCF), a certified method to avoid toxic chemicals and byproducts.

It is important to purchase the right sized cup to suit your cervix height (yep, we’ve all got different heights!) Knowing your cervical height isn’t something that’s routinely taught in schools but we have a guide all about how to measure it. Once you know whether you have a low, medium or high cervix height, you can make a more informed decision on which nüdie cup is right for you and better understand more things about your body like ovulation & fertility.

If you’ve got the right sized cup in the right place, you should experience no discomfort. Read our blog on why your cup might be hurting you.

You can wear a Mooncup® for up to 8 hours.

Yes, you can go to the toilet as you would normally whilst wearing your Mooncup®, unlike other harder period cups that can jut into you and cause pain whilst passing bowel movements.

After a bowel movement, we do advise just checking that the cup is still sitting properly. And of course, take extra care to wash your hands thoroughly.

Yes, the Mooncup® is perfect for night as it can be worn for up to 8 hours. If you have a particularly heavy flow, you may want to use an organic cotton pad in addition to give you extra protection whilst you sleep.

Absolutely. The Mooncup® is perfect for playing sports or undertaking fitness activities. No more feeling conscious that your pad or pants are showing through your leggings! Plus, as there’s literally no strings attached to a Mooncup®, they’re perfect for swimming. In fact, our Mooncup® Beginner is used by the GB Synchronised Swimming Team!

Read our blog all about swimming & menstrual cups.

We know that there are Mooncup® users who are happily using their Mooncup® alongside an IUD/IUS (coil), however there have been some instances where an IUD/IUS has become dislodged when using the devices together.

This may be due to anatomical factors (e.g. a low cervix), usage issues (e.g. wearing the Mooncup® too high) or simply that the IUD/IUS has been naturally rejected by the body. One in twenty IUD/IUS will be expelled, most commonly, in the first 3 months after the device has been inserted. These expulsions happen most frequently during menstruation.

If you are using the Mooncup® menstrual cup alongside an IUD/IUS, check you can still feel the IUD/IUS strings after each period. If you cannot feel them or think that your IUD/IUS has moved or is causing/has caused you pain, use another form of contraception until you have had your IUD/IUS checked by a doctor or medical professional.

If you are thinking about using the Mooncup® menstrual cup alongside an IUD/IUS, consult your doctor, IUD/ IUS fitter, or gynaecologist first.

Please also consider the following information:

  • There should always be a space between the Mooncup® and the cervix. If you have a low sitting cervix there may not be enough room for the Mooncup® to sit safely and work effectively alongside your IUD/IUS.
  • The Mooncup® is designed to be worn as low as it will comfortably sit in the vagina and form a light seal with the walls of the vagina.
  • It is important to release the seal before removing the Mooncup®.
